Together We're Better
Vail, Beaver Creek, Breckenridge and Keystone are all operated under permit of the White River National Forest. Located in central Colorado, the White River National Forest encompasses over 2.3 million acres of National Forest lands.
The White River National Forest was established in 1891 as the White River Plateau Timber Reserve; the second such reserved to be named in the United States. In 1905 the newly formed Forest Service was given authority of the reserve.
Long before this designation, the area was home to the Ute Indians who followed herds of elk and bison on their seasonal migrations.
Today the Forest is a world-renowned recreation destination. With more than 12 million visitors per year, the White River is the most visited recreation forest in the country.
Crested Butte Mountain Resort operates under permit from the Grand Mesa, Uncompahgre and Gunnison National Forest. The Grand Mesa, Uncompahgre and Gunnison National Forests are administered as a single unit from the Forest Supervisor's Office in Delta, Colorado. This was not always so. The Grand Mesa and Uncompahgre were not joined until 1954 as a single administrative unit; the Gunnison was added in 1973. The three forests have a combined net area of 2, 951,799 acres. It is the largest National Forest administrative unit in the Rocky Mountain Region.
Attitash Mountain Resort, Wildcat Mountain, and Mount Sunapee all operate under permit from the White Mountain National Forest. The White Mountain National Forest in eastern New Hampshire and western Maine ranges from mountainous hardwood forests to majestic alpine peaks. It is known for its breathtaking scenery, clear mountain lakes and streams, wildlife, and outdoor recreation opportunities year round.
Mount Snow operates under permit from the Green Mountain National Forest. The Green Mountain National Forest encompasses more than 400,000 acres in southwestern and central Vermont, forming the largest contiguous public land area in the state. Characterized by striking scenery that combines rugged mountain peaks with quintessential Vermont villages, the Forest is an attraction for many visitors.
It's All Yours
These lands are a gift. Congress began conserving these lands back in 1891 for all of us. More than 100 years later, this gift continues to inspire, restore, and provide. From offering nearly endless ways to play to providing water, clean air and resources for millions, each of the 174 forests and grasslands highlights the best of America’s public lands heritage. The U.S. Forest Service and National Forest Foundation work to steward these lands on your behalf. So pick a spot, choose an activity, and go play!
